The Garden Museum, housed in the old church of St. Mary-at-Lambeth, is a space in which we explore our relationship with, and the social history of gardens. Volunteer Tour Guides are part of the Welcome Team Volunteers.
In addition to the responsibilities of the Welcome Team, Tour Guides play a key role in the museum’s Guided Tour Programme. Please refer to the full Welcome Team Volunteer Role Description.
Role Description
Volunteer Tour Guides lead engaging, informative 30-45 minute tours of our exhibitions. With support and training, they will create their own tour by selecting and researching several of their favourite pieces.
They will understand the museum’s values and aims and be able to answer questions regarding the museum and our collections.
Tour Guides will also be able to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both visitors and artworks during tours.
General Responsibilities
- Leading and managing small groups on engaging and informative tours of the museum’s collection.
- Ensure visitors have a welcoming, informative and enjoyable experience.
- Take part in the relevant training provided for the tours.
- Assist with providing general information about the museum.
- Assist the Welcome team at the front desk, shop desk and on the museum floor in between tours.
- Support staff in fostering and inclusive and accessible environment.
Requirements
- Good communication and public speaking skills.
- Enthusiasm for museums, gardening, horticulture, history, art, or cultural heritage.
- Friendly, approachable, and able to engage with diverse audiences.
- Willingness to learn about the exhibition content and our collections.
- Punctuality and reliability in keeping to commitments.
- No prior tour guiding experience required. Training will be provided but willingness to research, create and give a tour that is individual to you is essential.
- Available for a training day in early October 2025. Date to be confirmed.
