At the heart of the exhibition are exquisite works of art, rare manuscripts and botanical illustrations from Mrs. Mellon’s personal collection – now housed at the Oak Spring Garden Library in Virginia. These treasured pieces served as inspiration for de Gournay’s new hand-painted wallpaper and porcelain collection, which pays homage to Mrs. Mellon’s enduring passion for gardens, craftsmanship and the natural world.
Displayed against immersive de Gournay backdrops, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the quiet, understated beauty and botanical richness that defined Mrs. Mellon’s vision. From detailed studies of plants and flowers by artists such as Charles Germain de Saint-Aubin, Domenico Buonvicini and Elizabeth Blackwell to her own garden designs, the exhibition celebrates a life devoted to artful cultivation – whether on the page or in the landscape.
Bunny Mellon: A Life in Bloom is both a tribute to her extraordinary legacy and a showcase of how it lives on through de Gournay’s hand-painted wallpapers and porcelain – designs that reimagine her world in breathtaking detail.
