The artist must have positioned himself on the pavement to get this view. Spring Grove in Holmfirth still looks much the same today, apart from the removal of one of the sheds. Stubley was born and lived in Yorkshire and has effectively captured the damp, lush feeling of this part of England. He trained at Edinburgh College of Art and illustrated numerous children’s books.
