Friends Private View | Ivon Hitchens: The Painter in the Woods

Friends of the Garden Museum are invited to a private view of our upcoming exhibition, Ivon Hitchens: The Painter in the Woods.

Ivon Hitchens (1893-1979) left London during the Second World War, retreating to rural Sussex with his wife and son. It was here, from a caravan in the woodlands,  that he began to paint vibrant, semi-abstract works of his surroundings and the changing seasons. The garden at the family home of Greenleaves became a lifelong project for Ivon, and his paintings showcase this unexpected gardener’s quest to always seek new perspectives on the natural world. This exhibition is the next in our Artist Gardener series following 2018’s Cedric Morris: Artist Plantsman.

Friends plus one guest are invited to explore the exhibition, enjoy a glass of wine, and an introductory talk from Museum Curator, Eleanor Black (talks will take place at 18:45, 19:15 and 19:45). The Garden Café will also be open serving delicious dinner and drinks throughout the night.

Guests can sign up as a Friend on the night and receive a free gift.
