In Your Garden: Emma’s Kent Garden

In our series #GMinyourgarden, we’re peeking over the fence into gardens across the country to explore their places in our lives today. This week, Emma’s Kent garden:

“We have lived in our home, surrounded by a third of an acre of garden for 25 years. For years the garden was simply a few old fruit trees and a grass playground for free range children and dogs, guinea pigs and hens. Raising such a busy family meant I had to put my dream of creating a beautiful garden full of flowers firmly to one side.

Then, seven years ago I fell seriously ill and it took me many months to recover both physically and emotionally. As part of my journey back to health I decided to start growing a few flowers from seed to fill a flower bed to the side of the house. I had very little gardening know-how back then, but when those tiny seeds started to germinate and flourish, and when I plunged my hands into the soil, it awakened something in me that had lain dormant for so many years… a desire to nurture and create, to learn and surround myself with all the beauty of nature.

Over the years we have dug up more and more of the grass, and now we have deep borders full of roses and pollinator friendly flowers and shrubs, a new wildlife pond and a kitchen garden where I grow a jumbly mix of herbs, veggies, fruit and cut flowers which I love to share with our friends and neighbours.

This kitchen garden is my favourite place to be on a summers day – I love to sit with a cuppa, immersed in nature and watching the bees and butterflies as they spuddle from flower to flower.”
