Inspired by Lucian Freud’s painting of a bat in our upcoming exhibition Lucian Freud: Plant Portraits, join us for a guided bat walk around Archbishop’s Park next door to the Garden Museum.
Hosted by Lambeth Council’s ‘borough ecologist’ Dr Iain Boulton, we’ll be looking for bats and bat activity. The walk, which normally lasts for an hour, will use tools such as bat detectors to listen for bats, and hopefully you’ll also see them as your eyes get used to the dark!
Find out about the origins, importance and lifestyles of our British bats, and what we can do to help protect and encourage them. All equipment provided.

About Dr Iain Boulton
Dr Iain Boulton works for Lambeth Council in their Parks and Open Spaces service, and is the ‘borough ecologist’ for Lambeth. He’s been working for the council for 22 years, and has an extensive knowledge and understanding of its wildlife and biodiversity. Ian has a particular interest in bats, and is actively involved in working with others, including residents, other council, services and businesses in helping understand more about where our bats live and feed, and ensuring they are suitably protected and being encouraged through appropriate planting and habitat creation. Iain has a background in applied ecology, and used to be a lecturer in environmental sciences before he came to Lambeth.
In case you want to know, his PhD is in ‘ecological toxicology’ – the effects of pollutants and contaminants on wild animals and plants!
