Talk | An Evening with Alan Titchmarsh: A Journey Through the Garden Museum Archives

Join us for an evening with Alan Titchmarsh as we take a magical mystery tour through the Garden Museum archives. This fundraising event is in support of the Archive of Garden Design.

Alan Titchmarsh will take us on a journey through the Garden Museum archives, sharing highlights from his own collection, projected on the big screen and brought to life with stories, voices, and unexpected discoveries.

Joining Alan is Garden Museum Archivist Alexandra Sullivan, who will reveal behind-the-scenes insights and favourite finds, while three special guests share how the archives have shaped their work. The evening concludes with remarks from Director Christopher Woodward and an audience Q&A.

Alongside featured items from Alan Titchmarsh’s archives, further items include ecologist and designer Marney Hall; landscape legend Russell Page; and father-and-son designers William and Arthur Nesfield, plus an exclusive preview of our upcoming Burle Marx exhibition.

Ticket sales support the Museum’s operations, with the option to donate to the Archive of Garden Design on the night — helping preserve garden history for future generations.

Gardener, writer, journalist, and media personality Alan Fred Titchmarsh CBE was born in Wharfedale, Yorkshire, on 2 May 1949, the son of Alan and Bessie Titchmarsh. Alan married Alison in 1975, and they have two daughters.

Alan was introduced to gardening through his maternal grandfather, who had an allotment. His early horticultural career included an apprenticeship with Ilkley parks department nursery, and a role as the Supervisor of Staff Training the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. Alan later pursued a career in horticultural journalism, and is perhaps best known for hosting the Chelsea Flower Show from 1983 until 2013; and presenting Ground Force. Alan has written over 50 books, including gardening guides, autobiographies, and novels; as well as various newspaper and magazine articles. He supports multiple charities, is a Vice President of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), and is the President of the Garden Museum.

Alan’s commitment and hard work has been recognised through multiple accolades, including Freeman of the City of London; Garden Writer of the Year; and the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour. In 2000 Alan was appointed MBE, and he was made a CBE in the 2025 New Year Honours List for services to horticulture and to charity.
