Join us for a screening of 2 short films, each offering a unique perspective on Common Ground, followed by a Q&A with the incredible directors behind each film:
‘The Last English Poacher’ is a film that follows Brian Tovey – the closest thing the country might have to an indigenous person living off the land. An antihero of conservation and nature, Brian’s outlook is anti-establishment and his way of life is almost off-grid, tucked away in a village on the edge of the English Cotswolds. He roams his surrounding fields and woods illegally hunting for game on private estates belonging to the big land-owners – Earls, Lords, Duchesses and farmers, an almost ethereal existence that clings to the age-old conflict between common and forest Law. ‘The Last English Poacher’ is an elegy to England’s changing rural communities, and our diminishing connection to the land. What can we learn from an outcast? Emma Crome, the independent film-maker and director behind the film, will join for a Q&A after the film.
‘Before the Bees are Awake’ introduces us to ByBi, an urban bee-keeping workshop in Copenhaguen, home to a community of local beekeepers, volunteers and family histories, where honey is seen as an invitation to connect, rather than just a product to consume. The film introduces us to Aref, from Syria’s Afrin region, who is applying his 14 years of bee-housing experience to build hives for ByBi to place around the urban landscape. Director Dariya Cheremisina, an architect by trade, will also join to share her own reflections and motivations for making this film after the screening.
This event is part of the Harvest Festival programme, festival tickets must be booked separately.
