Earth Day 2024: Family Fun

Free Family Activities. Join us on Sunday 21st April for a day of family fun. Over the course of the day there will be different activities taking place. All are free, on a drop-in basis and aimed at families with young children aged from 3+. Get your hands in the earth using compost and clay in our two drop-in workshops - seed sowing in the morning and making pots using clay in the afternoon. Move and dance together in celebration of Earth Day in our playful movement lunchtime session. You can pick and choose which activity you would like to come to and we will try to accommodate everyone. This year's international theme for Earth Day is about going plastic free so we will be aiming to make it a plastic free day.

11:00 am – 12:30 pm Drop-in seed sowing workshop.

Decorate a terracotta plant pot, then plant some seeds into it to take home. Children can personalise a small terracotta plant pot and then fill it with compost and use dibbers and tampers to plant it up with flower, herb or salad seeds. Session led by Garden Museum Learning staff.

12:30pm – 1:30 pm Family Dance workshop.

A playful movement workshop for the whole family. Through dance games and moving together, we will think about Earth Day and how we can have an impact as individuals and as part of a group. There will be a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. All ages are welcome and no previous dance experience needed. Facilitated by Julia Korning, founder of Me&Baby Dance. https://meandbaby.dance/

1:30 pm – 3:00 pm Clay workshop making olla pots and plant pots.

Olla pots are pots for watering indoor or outdoor plants sustainably. Fired at a low temperature, the water slowly soaks through the clay into the soil and to the plant’s roots. The olla pots and plant pots made in the session will be fired and can be collected at a later date or donated to the museum for using in our plant display in our Clore Learning Space. Led by ceramics artist Monica Tong who trained at the Royal College of Art.
