Branch Out | The Gardening Drawing Club’s the Basics of Seed Saving

This workshop is part of the Garden Museum's Branch Out programme, a series of free events and activities exploring gardening, art, floristry, plant science, history, design, and more!

Spend a cosy autumn afternoon with The Gardening Drawing Club.  Guided by artist-gardener Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck, this workshop will nurture your understanding, skills and confidence, giving you the basic know-how to start saving seeds.

Together, we will go through the ancestral practice of seed savings, which is a way to protect and ensure seed sovereignty, as well as save money. We will explore the fundamentals of seed saving with examples from vegetables, herbs, and flowers before we paint and draw patterns and impressions from these encounters with smaller and larger seeds.

“Some save seeds to preserve a link with the past, growing a variety their parents grew or one peculiar to the place they live. Some do it to assure themselves a supply of seed of a variety no longer available. Some are making a deliberate stand against current trends in the seed industry. Some do it in order to conserve heritage varieties and produce seed that can be given to others. Seed saving completes the cycle of organic growing and for some saving seed is an opportunity to save money, manage their own seed supplies or even breed new varieties. “ – Heritage Seed Library UK

This workshop is most suitable for adults and those over fourteen with the presence of their carer.
