In our new series #GMinyourgarden, we’re peeking over the fence into gardens across the country to explore their places in our lives today. Not large, designer-led spaces, but small-scale personal gardens lovingly nurtured by their creators (and which nurture them right back!).
This week, Kay Maynard’s garden in Wales:
“I fell in love with gardening about five years ago, prior to that I had never gardened. When we moved into our little Welsh cottage, the U shaped garden was a total blank canvas, not a plant or tree in sight! Our first step was to plant trees. We then created different zones: the front garden, the garden shelter, shady garden and the back garden.
The climate has dictated most of what has been done. We get such a lot of rainfall, hence the garden shelter area. The side garden did not cope well with the rainfall so the grass was removed, it is now a barked area and has become a lovely shady garden.
The pets are always with me; they love the garden as much as I do. The garden shelter was built with the sausages in mind too as they hate the rain. Our garden is constantly evolving. I wouldn’t want it any other way. I think that’s what I most appreciate about gardening, it’s constantly changing, change for me is a good thing, it keeps my mind and body busy.”
