First Prize – Guided tour of Lucian Freud’s studio

A private tour of Freud’s former home and studio in London for you and three guests, hosted by Freud’s former assistant, model and friend, the painter David Dawson.

Freud worked at his home on Kensington Church Street, for nearly 40 years and died there in 2011. It now belongs to Dawson, who has kept the studio almost exactly as it was on that day. The studio was visited by countless notable sitters including Kate Moss and Jerry Hall. The Garden Museum has been granted unprecedented access to the studio, which is not open to the public, thanks to the generosity of Dawson.

The house is surrounded by a garden designed by Todd Longstaffe-Gowan with Dawson, which the winners will also have the opportunity to see.

Second Prize – A cutting from Lucian Freud’s Zimmerlinde plant

Freud painted his Zimmerlinde (Sparrmannia africana) many times throughout his life, including in the painting Still Life with Zimmerlinde (c.1950), on display in our exhibition Plant Portraits

The artist’s famous grandfather, the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, grew his own Zimmerlinde in Vienna before moving to the United Kingdom after fleeing the rise of the Nazi regime in 1938. Lucian’s Zimmerlinde became an unofficial Freud family emblem, and cuttings of the plant were passed on to family members as a living keepsake.

This beautiful cutting from Freud’s own Zimmerlinde has been grown by garden designer Todd Longstaffe-Gowan and holds a unique connection to the family dynasty.

Third Prize – Framed Howard Sooley photographic print

Photographer Howard Sooley has donated a framed print of his photograph of Lucian Freud’s studio. In the photo you can see where Freud would wipe his palettes and brushes on the studio wall, creating thick layers of paint and colour.
