Cooking Masterclass | Africana with Lerato Umah-Shaylor

Join food writer and presenter, Lerato Umah-Shaylor for a 3-hour cookery masterclass in our learning studio, where you will travel across Africa one dish at a time.

Celebrating vibrant flavours from Senegal to South Africa, Tunisia to Mozambique, you will learn to cook a diverse feast from Lerato’s debut cookbook Africana, using wondrous spices with the best of the season to bring the magic of the continent to your kitchen. You will enjoy a combination of hands-on cooking and a demo by Lerato.

Spiced Hibiscus with Ginger & Citrus drink as a welcome drink

Aubergine Yassa with Caramelised Onion & Lemon 
African Grain Salad with Fonio, a bouquet of Herbs & Pomegranates

This class is a combination of hands on and demo by Lerato

Open to all levels of skills and interests. This class is suitable for Adults 16 and over.

*This class is part of our hands-on monthly masterclass cooking sessions, which focus on specialist topics or advanced cooking techniques.  Sessions are usually on Sunday and held in the Garden Museum’s food learning studio. Each class is 3 hours, and will include tastings or a full meal eaten together depending on the course. All profits from our cooking masterclass series help to cover food costs for our community programmes.

    Lerato Umah-Shaylor

    Lerato Umah-Shaylor is a food writer, presenter, and leading voice in African cuisine. Inspired by her love of Africa and the glorious foods of the continent, she set up the popular, immersive supper clubs and cookery classes in London, Brighton, and the Southeast. Growing up in both West Africa and the UK, while extensively travelling around the continent, Lerato’s unique perspective can be seen in her approach to cooking, with a marriage of rich traditions and contemporary recipes. She develops recipes for some of the best food and lifestyle brands and is a regular guess on BBC Cook on the books. You can find more about her writing on her newsletter, Cook with Lerato. Her debut cookbook Africana (HQ Stories /HarperCollins) is out this September
