In our series #GMinyourgarden, we’re peeking over the fence into gardens across the country to explore their places in our lives today. This week, Louise’s Isle of Wight garden:
“We came to live here 22 years ago. The garden was the proverbial ‘blank canvas’, and we wanted the house to be enveloped in a garden full of flowers, scent, wildlife, as well as growing food for our family and the creatures that we share it with.
The garden needed enclosing, to protect it from the ravages of salty winds, and the voracious rabbit population. We started by planting native hedges, trees, and an orchard so eventually the place would be billowing with blossom and fruit. As time allowed, (with three small daughters), we slowly developed the garden, wiring off sections from the rabbits so we could safely plant.
We filled it with roses, wild flowers, topiary, and all manner of fruit and vegetables. Over the years the wildlife has come; red squirrels are ever present, barn owls nest in the house roof, and we are visited by buzzards, badgers, foxes, and so many fascinating tiny insects! The garden is a haven for all of us and for me there is no better feeling than working outside surrounded by beauty and our little visitors.”
