In our new series #GMinyourgarden, we’re peeking over the fence into gardens across the country to explore their places in our lives today. This week, Glengall Wharf Garden, where Garden Museum Duty Manager Faye Matloub has been volunteering for three years:
“It’s been nearly three years since I began volunteering at Glengall Wharf Garden.
I’m part of the Hen Party, a small group of people who look after the rescue chickens at Glengall Wharf Garden. Being a part of this community garden and the chicken group has provided me with so much more than just access to a green space; I’ve become a member of a community.
Before joining the community garden, I had no gardening experience let alone seen a chicken in person. I’ve been able to take part in the wonderful events hosted at the garden by other lovely volunteers. Mabon, the autumn equinox festival we held last year, was a highlight and bought us all together to give thanks to our space.
I even had the pleasure of hosting the first free supper club for the community at the garden, as part of a new Southwark Council-funded programme. My mum and I fed 40 people Iraqi dolma, a truly surreal experience.
I began volunteering because I lived nearby at the time, and despite moving several times, I have kept this community (and the chickens) close to my heart. I used to commute to feed the chickens when I lived in Stoke Newington!
This garden (and coop) have given me so much love and joy and I hope these images bring some to you.”
