By popular demand and with kind permission of Michael Le Poer Trench, we are making a return visit to Stavordale Priory in Somerset.
Our day begins with a visit to the romantic 2 1/2- acre garden at Pen Mill Farm, in a sheltered valley on a tributary of the river Stour. Owner Sarah FitzGerald will guide us through this plantsman’s garden featuring mature trees and unusual acid-loving plants, where the borders will brim with late summer perennials and 50 varieties of salvia. After coffee and cake, we travel to Common Farm Flowers for a return visit, again by popular demand, to see how flower farmer and author, Georgie Newbery has turned her Somerset smallholding into a successful artisan floristry company. Georgie will give us a tour of this fascinating and inspiring site.
After lunch we will spend the afternoon at the splendid Stavordale Priory, home of Michael Le Poer Trench and his partner, theatre producer, Cameron Mackintosh, whose gardens are described by Gardens Illustrated as ‘singing with creativity and invention’. Our visit to this garden in 2016 was unforgettable, and Michael will again invite us to explore the garden’s borders, sculpted topiary, elegant lawns and occasional surprise feature. The gardens were featured on BBC Gardener’s World in July 2016 to much acclaim. Originally laid out by the previous owner and garden designer, Georgia Langton, the gardens overflow with additions made by Michael over the last 20 years, including an arboretum and a ‘no-dig’ vegetable garden. We will enjoy tea and cakes in this wonderful garden before departing for the station.
We will start from Gillingham station (Dorset) and transport between gardens is provided.
We recommend you read our Garden Visits Attendee Charter before booking your place on any of our Garden Visits.
