THE SERGE HILL PROJECT, HERTFORDSHIRE photo by Clive Nichols
We are delighted to offer a very special day in Hertfordshire exploring the gardens of internationally acclaimed landscape designer Tom Stuart-Smith (@tomstuartsmith) and his sister, Kate Stuart-Smith (@katestuartsmith).
Guests will arrive at 10am at The Barn Garden, the private gardens of Tom and Sue Stuart-Smith, where Tom’s planting philosophy blends naturalism with modernity. Over tea and coffee, Tom will offer a personal welcome and opening remarks before we explore the garden. This private insight into one of Britain’s most admired private gardens is an opportunity not to be missed.
The visit continues with a tour of Serge Hill Garden, generously opened for us by Kate Stuart-Smith. Serge Hill is a romantic garden with lovely views over its own parkland and a walled garden bursting with produce and perennials. We are deeply grateful to Kate for including Serge Hill in the day’s itinerary.
Lunch will be in the Apple House, a stunning purpose built eco-barn which is home to Tom and Sue’s Community Interest Company, The Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health (@sergehillproject) and followed by the chance to browse a plant sale run by the on-site Orchard Nursery. Guests will then explore the Plant Library, a pioneering living catalogue collection of over 2000 perennials and bulbs. Here, guests will have the chance to see rare and unusual species up close and hear more about the thinking behind this unique project.
The afternoon will conclude with tea and another opportunity to browse the plant sale before departure.
Unlike our classic garden visits, guests are asked to make their own way to the Serge Hill Gardens. Parking will be available on site, or alternatively, the gardens are just a 10-minute taxi ride from King’s Langley Station. With only 36 places available, we anticipate this will be a highly popular event, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
