World War I British Detainees Garden, Rhuleben Camp, Germany
Photograph of a garden created by World War I British civilian detainees at the Rhuleben Camp near Berlin in Germany. Dated 1917 and annotated ‘Hut my Father built with Red Cross Boxes’ and ‘with best love, Mathilde’. From a series of photographs taken at the camp by Frank Hamilton Narraway, a professor at a German university at the outbreak of war, which led to his internment, although married to Mathilde who was German. Gift of Ann Narraway, granddaughter of Frank & Mathilde.
