Wonderful late-summer colour in Essex 6th September- Tickets still available!

Essex is an underrated county with some spectacular hidden gems, so come with us on this enjoyable and interesting day, to discover them.

We start our day at Ulting Wick, Maldon, a garden that has gained widespread recognition in the gardening press for its riotously colourful late summer show, featuring over 100 different dahlias as well as annuals and grasses raised in-house. After morning coffee, Philippa Burrough and her gardener Neil Bradford will be our guides to show us around this exciting and adventurous garden, also admired for its amazing tulip display in Spring. Created around a 17th century farmhouse and delightfully restored listed barns, the garden's other attractions include a romantic pond area, vegetable beds and Philippa's most recent project, a perennial wildflower meadow.

From here we travel to The Maldon Smokehouse, a great little cafe on the River Blackwater, for a delicious two-course lunch with wine. In the afternoon, we will visit Furzelea, a plantsman's delight of a garden with beautifully composed, colour-coordinated borders, well worth studying for their inventive plant combinations. Planned for year-round interest, Furzelea has been created on a south-facing slope by owners Avril and Roger Cole-Jones around their Victorian country house. Themed areas feature a raised stone terrace, impressive topiary and unusual shrubs, plus a beautiful thatched summerhouse. Afternoon tea will be served here.

We will start from Hatfield Peverel station and transport between gardens is provided.

The day includes morning coffee, a delicious two-course lunch with wine and afternoon tea
