The plants have been chosen for their unusual spicy scents, and for their cultural compatibility. All of them are sun lovers, from dry climates - the Salvia from Mexico, the Dianthus from the Mediterranean and the Eleaegnus from Russia,Turkey and Iran.

All three have strong spicy perfumes which set them apart from the majority of floral scented plants; in May and June the small yellow flowers of the Eleaegnus emit an intoxicating perfume reminiscent of cinnamon and clove, the Dianthus has a pure clove scent in June and July, while the foliage of the Salvia smells of sage and mint, and flowers until the first frosts.

The flowers of both the Dianthus and the Salvia are edible.
