Clapham Gardens Walking Tour 4th July - SOLD OUT
Today we are in Clapham, London SW4 to explore seven urban gardens full of character and charm. Artists, architects, a professional designer, garden writers and bloggers and community volunteers will welcome us to their gardens, which range in size from tiny to generous for a town garden.
Each has its own individual expression - styles range from cool and collected to exuberant and colourful - and it is fascinating to see how each gardener has risen to the challenge of making a garden, whether over 30 years or in less than five.
Along the way, we will see how a dose of guerilla gardening and community-minded determination has worked wonders in Clapham Manor Street, and we will experience the calm serenity of the award-winning Eden garden*, tended organically by local volunteers.
Writing in The Independent in 2012, Anna Pavord observed that Clapham is full of surprises: "Sometimes you go up steps to a front door, but then have to plunge down at the back to access the garden space. Sometimes the garden is at the same level as the front hall. You haven't any idea when you step into a house what you are going to emerge into on the other side." Our day offers a great opportunity to explore!
Taking short walks between each venue, we will cover a total distance of approximately 1 1/2 miles. Our day will conclude with a special invitation to view the last garden from several floors in the house.
The day includes morning coffee, a delicious two-course lunch with wine and afternoon tea.
